Oduku also fingered an ex-militant leader, who he accused of “aiding and abetting criminals in their community in the recent attack on oil and gas installations within and outside the kingdom,” Vanguard reports. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Whatsapp A group of Niger- Delta militants He said: “Investigation by our security outfit has shown that NDA, which has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta are from Gbaramatu kingdom.” Oduku also tasked traditional rulers, community leaders and well- meaning Niger- Deltans to denounce the activities of group as devilish, advising youths in the region not to join this group and other militia groups. However in a swift response, the Ijaw leader from Gbaramatu kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, said: “Gbaramatu people are not part of Niger Delta Avengers, which took responsibility for the recent bombing of oil installations in the state and can never be part of them. Nigeria Spends N14,000 daily to feed Prisoner - Minister

Nigerian government is annually spending N10billion for feeding of prisoners in the country, minister of Interior, AbdurRahman Dambazau has said.

With the country’s estimated prison population of 57,000, the government is roughly spending N14,000 for a three-square meal of each prisoner per day.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Kaduna on Tuesday, Dambazau said his ministry is searching inward to see how it can harness some revenue sources in the sector to complement government’s efforts.

“It is unacceptable for government to be commiting N10 billion every year on feeding of prison inmates,” Dambazau said.

145 Naira Petrol Price: We Shall Resist Increase, Labour Says

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will resist what it called unilateral increase in prices of petroleum products by the government, saying “it represents the height of insensitivity and impunity”.

In a statement by the union after a new price band of 145 Naira per litre for Premium Motor Spirit was announced by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the labour union said the increase was the least one had expected at this point in time.

Audacious And Cruel

“With the imposition on the citizenry of criminal and unjustifiable electricity tariff and resultant darkness and other economic challenges brought on by the devaluation of the Naira and spiralling inflation, the least one had expected at this point in time was another policy measure that would further make life more miserable for the ordinary Nigerian.

“The latest increase is the most audacious and cruel in the history of product price increase as It represents not only about 80 per cent increase but it is tied to the black market exchange rate,” the statement signed by the union’s spokesman, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, read.

According to the union, the process through which government arrived at the increase was both illogical and illegal as the board of the PPPRA was not duly constituted.

Revert The Prices

The NLC pointed out that in its previous statements and communiques, it had stressed the need for reconstituting the boards of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and PPPRA and wean both away from the overbearing influence of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources whom it claimed had assumed the role of a Sole Administrator.

“The allusion to the fact that the this increase was arrived at after due consultation with stake holders is not only ridiculous and fallacious, it goes to show that the brief meeting held today during which government was advised shelve the idea until at least it meets with the appropriate organs of the Congress was in bad faith.

“Accordingly, we urge the government to revert the prices to what they were. We would want to put everybody on notice that we shall resist this criminal increase with every means legitimate,” the union stated.

The union has already scheduled an emergency NEC meeting for Friday, May 13, to decide on the next line of action and requested that affiliates, state councils and civil society allies should commence mobilisation immediately.

PETROL PRICE NOW #145

Ayorinde Oluokun/Abuja

The Federal Government finally deregulated the price of premium motor spirit, popularly known as petrol on Wednesday after a long drawn stake holders meeting in Aso Rock presidential villa, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

At the end of the meeting also attended by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, the Federal government announced that it is raising the price of petrol, with N145.00 as the highest price the product will sell for.

The government said the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, PPPRA will announce details of the new price later.

The government said the measure is aimed at curbing the scarcity of the product.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, (PPPRA) on Wednesday evening confirmed N145 as the maximum price per litre for sale of premium motor spirit, otherwise known as petrol in filling stations across the country.

The Agency, in a statement signed by Sotonye E. Iyoyo, its Executive Secretary however advised retail stations owned by state oil company, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC operating at the outskirts of major cities to sell at a lower price.

The statement by the PPPRA confirmed earlier announcement by Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and the Group Managing Director, NNPC on the price hike. The PPPRA said the increase in price will ensure efficient supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country.

PPPRA said “Statutorily enshrined in the PPPRA Act No 8, 2003, is the responsibility to moderate pricing for the Industry.

In performing this role, the PPPRA commenced a petroleum products price modulation framework on the 1st of January, 2016, with the aim of ensuring a ‘fit-for-all’ approach that seeks to serve the interest of the Nigerian Consumers, Marketers and the Economy.

“In furtherance of its mandate to ensure the efficient supply and distribution of petroleum products, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, (PPPRA), hereby announces, effective immediately that the new price band for PMS shall be at a maximum of N145/litre. However, NNPC Retail stations on the outskirts of major cities are advised to sell at price lower than N145/litre.

“This review became imperative in the face of extreme difficulties faced by Petroleum Product Importers in sourcing foreign exchange. To meet the consumption demand of the Nation, Importers will henceforth be permitted to source for their foreign exchange requirements from the secondary sources.

“PPPRA is conscious of the difficulties that Nigerians have been going through in the last few months and to ameliorate this situation, we shall continue to modulate pricing in accordance with prevailing market dynamics thereby ensuring fair value to all Citizens.”
