Lagooz School: Cautions Media Against Instigating Ethnic Crisis

The Arewa Council of Chiefs, Agege Kingdom, Lagos State, has cautioned the media against acts capable of triggering ethnic crisis in the country.

They sounded the note of caution following a recent report that Hausa teenagers attacked Lagooz Schools, Lagos, beat up the principal and made away with N1.5m.

Spokesperson of the council, Alhaji Kabiru Ali-Dinai, at a briefing at the school premises, said the report was in bad taste and a misrepresentation of the incident that took place on the fateful day.

Proprietor of the school, Yomi Otubela, who also spoke during the briefing, described the report, which claimed that “Hausa teenagers numbering 100, stormed Lagooz Schools in Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, during its valedictory service with machetes and other weapons, beat up the principal and a teacher; stole N1.5m as well as destroyed some of the school property,” as false, malicious, outrageous and exaggerated.

Ali-Dinai, who expressed disappointment with the report, said both the reporter and the media house ought to have carefully verified the incident before going to press. The spokesperson who said his people were no longer considered settlers, but as part and parcel of the community having existed there as far back as 1863, added that they have a track record of peaceful coexistence between the Hausa and the host community.

“And so, we were shocked when we saw the publication because to the best of our knowledge it was a minor issue, which had since been resolved. Our fear is this, this kind of publication can cause ethnic crisis. We decided that before we can take any legal action, we should do our findings to understand the purpose of that report.

Budget Scandal: FG may withdraw Yakubu Dogara Security Details

INDICATIONS emerged Sunday that security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara may be withdrawn on the orders of the Federal Government over the controversy surrounding the 2016 budget.
It was also gathered that a document linking the Majority leader of the House, Femi Gbajabimila with constituency projects worth over N4 billion which is domiciled in Osun and Niger States against the initial N1.8 billion constituency projects allocated to him was in circulation.
This is just as the secretariat of the House Appropriation Committee was on Sunday still under the watch of about four security operatives.
Security sources hinted that the withdrawal of security aides to the principal officers allegedly fingered in the budget brouhaha was ensure that there was no obstruction on the course of investigations.
Investigations revealed that the security personnel that were guiding the appropriation committee secretariat were not the regular operatives from the National Assembly.
Meanwhile about 27 civil society organisations have raised the alarm of alleged conspiracy with external forces against the leadership of the House of Representatives, saying that if nothing was done to apply caution, it would threaten the democracy in the country.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the national coordinator of Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko alongside other 26 CSOs, said "It is disingenuous for the sacked Appropriation committee chairman, Abdulmumin Jibrin to make any claims of exposing massive corruption in the House, accusing speaker Yakubu Dogara of moves to personally smuggle N30bn into 2016 budget."
He said that the understanding of the powers of the National Assembly seems to say that the legislature is constitutionally empowered to vet proposed budget since these elected officials were not rubber stamps of the president.

Army Relocates Special Forces Training School

The Nigerian Army has moved its Special Forces Training School to Buni Yadi, a town once controlled by Boko Haram in Yobe State.
Created at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency, the Special Forces is considered one Nigerian Army’s most effective fighting unit.
While giving reasons why the training school was moved from Niger State to Buni Yadi, the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, said it was because of the strategic location of the town in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents.
“We know the importance of this place – Buni Yadi. This is the route they (insurgents) passed through to other parts of the North East and even Plateau in the North Central,” he said while addressing troops at the training school on Saturday.
“It is better for us to have dominated and taken over the place,” the Lieutenant General said while assuring the troops of their welfare and logistics need, including required equipment to prosecute the war.
Buni Yadi, the headquarters of Gujba Local Government Area, was controlled by the Boko Haram for several months before it was recaptured by the military in March 2015. It is the town where 59 schoolboys were murdered by the Boko Haram as they slept in their dormitories at a Federal Government College in 2014.
The town is also the headquarters of the 27 Task Force Brigade of the Nigeria Army.
Speaking on Saturday, Mr. Buratai assured that the military will restore full peace to the North East in line with the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He charged the troops to sustain the momentum of ongoing counter insurgency operations to flush out the insurgents.
According to him, “Operation Lafia Dole’ has entered a critical stage. You must sustain the momentum; there is no going back
“There is no time to waste. We want full restoration of peace in the North East. That is what the president wants,” the chief of army staff said.
Mr. Buratai later told journalists that he was in Buni Yadi to see how the troops undergoing the Special Forces training were faring.
He explained that the exercise was to make the personnel resilient and be able to withstand challenges they might face in the course of the ongoing operations.

Man Beats & Rape Church Member After Her Birthday Party

A 31-year-old man identified only as Damilola has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman on Omole Estate, in the Ojodu area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that the victim, Favour (not real name) and Damilola were members of a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and the woman had invited the suspect to her birthday party on Tuesday, July 19.

Favour, a National Diploma holder and fashion designer, was allegedly told by the suspect five days after the birthday party that he had a surprise gift for her. The two were said to have gone to Damilola’s apartment on Otubor Street on Omole Estate, the suspect raped the victim in his room.

Punch Metro learnt that Favour reported the matter at the Ojodu Police Division and Damilola was arrested. The incident was also reported at the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Alausa.

A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch correspondent that Damilola had failed to show up at the victim’s birthday party and allegedly lured her to his house a week later.

She said, “Damilola and the lady were church friends. The lady had her birthday on Tuesday, July 19, and she invited all youths in the church who were her friends. Damilola, however, did not come. He, thereafter, called her to apologise and promised to make it up.

“On the following Sunday, Damilola called her that he had set up a makeup party and that the two were going to a restaurant. However, he took her to his house in the estate, and locked her up. He beat her up and raped her.

“When the lady regained her freedom, she reported the matter at the police station. On Monday, she, accompanied by other church youth executive, went to the DSVRT office in Alausa to make another report.”

The DSVRT Coordinator, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the victim had been taken for medical tests.

She said, “The suspect allegedly gave the victim multiple slaps and instructed her to pull off her dress. She was crying and begging. The victim later gave in and Damilola raped her.

“The DPP has requested the duplicate case file. The victim has been referred to the Mirabel Centre, Ikeja, for necessary tests. The suspect has yet to get a full-time job. He is into entertainment business.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest, adding that the matter had been transferred to the police gender unit.

Chocolate City Music Nigeria has signed a new artiste from Kenya, going by the name ‘Qritical’.

After losing both parents within a space of two months upon entering his teenage years, Eric Onyango Omollo better known as Qritiqal, turned to music as a cathartic expression of deep seated feelings no one should endure at such a young age.
Born in 1989 and raised in Mombasa Kenya, he ventured into music through school festivals. He hung out with local artistes who mentored him through his personal struggles, including the loss of one of his siblings, as he passionately pursued music as both therapeutic and a career path. After a chance meeting with Gyptian at a local show, he was inspired to record original material and debuted in 2010 as a sensational dancehall artiste with the single ‘Weak Inside’ – a nationwide hit.

The single won him the Best Video of the Year 2010 at the Nzumari Awards and the Best Video of The Year Coast Music Awards. In 2012, he dropped another hit single ‘Kupe’ where he was featured by Ogopa Deejayz Artist and Guru Col. Mustafa.

Having also shared a stage with the likes of Jaguar and Sauti Sol, he decided it was time for him to pause and develop his own unique sound, later on meeting and collaborating with local producer, Motif_On_The_Beat (Morris Kobia). Their collaboration produced successful DJ Dubplates for local DJs, at a time when he also doubled as a jingle maker for some advertisement agencies.

Good News! Federal Government To Begin Feeding 5.5 Million School Children

The Federal Government has said will commence its National Home Grown School Feeding Programme in September with 5.5 million school pupils across the country.

Mrs. Abimbola Adesanmi, the National Programme Manager for the scheme, who stated this at a stakeholders’ workshop on the Ogun State Home Grown School Feeding Programme, held in Abeokuta, on Wednesday, July 27, said the project would accommodate pupils in primary one to three at the take off stage.

She said while states, depending on readiness, would define their respective model based on cost effectiveness and sustainability, the federal government will provide oversight and technical support.

Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose had insisted that the School Feeding Programme of the federal government must be done without the proposed 40 per cent counterpart funding from the states, saying; “The Federal Government is already looking for excuse for the impending failure of the programme by asking States to contribute 40 per cent to the scheme.”

The governor, who said the school feeding programme was purely a contract between the APC-led Federal Government and Nigerians, asked; “Were the States consulted before the APC made the promise during the presidential campaign? How can you make a promise and win election on the basis of that promise and now expect States to help you to fulfill the promise? That to me is fraud!”

Nigeria Is Losing $500 Million To Cybercrime Annually – Communications Minister

The 26th National Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Computer Society has come and gone. At the event, Communication Minister Adebayo Shittu stated that Nigeria loses half a billion dollars to cybercrime annually.

“National safety and security include the nation’s cyberspace. Our growing dependence on digital infrastructure introduces and poses grave threats to national security. It is quite shocking that Nigeria loses about N127 billion which is 0.08 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP), yearly to cybercrime,” he said.

Be that as it may, ICT is still contributing a lot to Nigeria’s GDP – experts estimate that that contribution is as much as 10%. According to a report in iAfrikan, ICT and related services are responsible for the creation of over 10  million jobs in the last decade, and over $32 billion in foreign direct investment.

In Africa, Nigeria is the second largest ICT market, with the number of internet subscribers in Nigeria skyrocketing from less than one million in 2003 to over 80 million in November 2015.
The federal government has inaugurated a Cybercrime Advisory Council with the aim of tackling cybercrime in the country, and computer emergency response teams have been put in place via the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and NITDA.

The government is also making use of technology in some of its functions. Some of them include the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“Though great strides have been made in these areas, there is still a lot to do to secure our dear nation. We all know that ICT is the globally recognized enabler in all spheres of development and it is most appropriate for NCS to step in by offering the nation an authentic platform to explore the role of ICT in national safety and security. Using ICT and Geographical Information Systems to tackle Boko Haram, Niger Delta militancy and other security challenges with enhanced efficiency and professionalism has become a matter of paramount importance,” Shittu said, according to Afrikan.

Police Arrest Fake Soldier Extorting Money From Prostitutes Abuja

A self-professed soldier, identified only as Emeka, was on Saturday reportedly arrested for extorting money from prostitutes in a brothel in Zone 2 area of Dutsen Alhaji, Abuja.

The 27-year-old man, a resident of Zone 3 in the area, was arrested at about 2.00 a.m. in the brothel fully kitted in army camouflage.
His arrest came after he went to the brothel with his accomplice where they broke into the rooms of the prostitutes and forcefully extorted some undisclosed amount of money from them.

Reports claim that the commercial s*x workers who refused to give them money were beaten up by the suspects, while some that gave less than N1,000 were tied with rope.

Dr. M.S. Idiagbon of the University Ilorin Sex Scandal

University Of Ilorin Lecturer Caught Harassing Female Student
Dr. Mohammed Sani Idiagbon, a University of Ilorin lecturer was caught on a tape sexually harassing a female student in his office.
According to a very close friend of the victim in the audio clip who claimed anonymity, the girl missed his class test. Consequently, Idiagbon used the opportunity to invite her to his office for sex as the only alternative to pass the course.

The report attached to the YouTube clip shows that the school management, up till 30th May 2016, failed to see to the matter and therefore left the student in great threat and despair. However, according to Sahelnewsonline correspondent, though the university is yet to make official remarks on this issue, recent report gathered so far has shown that Idiagbon has been suspended by the school authority.

Report gathered shows that Idiagbon has two major ways of setting traps for students – making them to fail his course and attaching to him a lot of female project/thesis supervisees.

“Gist has it that he preys on innocent ladies in the department – exchanging sex for grades. Mind you, he feast on supersize ladies who are way beyond his fist. In addition, this man has no pity and can crush even male students that will not leave their ‘target’. I can only describe Idiagbon as Sex-for-Grade Master (SGM).” said Babajide Roland, former student of the department.

“This lecturer tells his students to their face that they will fail his course (i.e. Syntax), a challenging course to most students. A classmate once told me he wanted to sleep with her in his office. She told him she was engaged and he replied that’s not new; she then lied that she was pregnant and he replied it is even sweeter with pregnancy. Anyway, what happened next my friend didn’t tell me.” Lamented Mrs. Adeyemi L. Adedigba, a former student of Idiagbon.

Surprisingly, almost 95% of his students (former and current) interviewed claimed that Idiagbon does his sexual and corrupt acts in collaboration with his co-worker in the department, Taofeeq Alabi (popularly called Michael Jackson). Some of these students say that these two University of Ilorin English Department lecturers ensure they’re made to be in charge of students' results compilation team and volunteer most times to serve as members of examination committee in order to ease perpetration of their atrocities.

Since a bill for a law which prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who engage in sexual relationship with students has passed second reading at the senate, it is the belief of most concerned Nigerians (students in particular) that Idiagbon should be brought to book with no delay in order to serve as deterrent for other lecturers like him.

It is believed that according to the sponsor of the bill, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege “...the bill imposes stiff penalties on offenders in its overall objective of providing tighter statutory protection for students against sexual hostility and all forms of sexual harassment in tertiary schools. The bill provides a compulsory five-year jail term for lecturers who sexually harass students. When passed into law, vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and other chief executives of institutions of higher learning will go to jail for two years if they fail to act within a week on complaints of sexual harassment made by students…”

The Federal Government has scrapped Post UTME

The Federal Government has scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for candidates seeking admission into higher institution across the country.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said this on Thursday in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other institutions.

Minister Adamu expressed confidence in the examination conducted by JAMB and added that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after JAMB.

He said: “As far as I am concerned the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing.

The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it.

“If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.”

The Minister also asked the JAMB to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.

Meanwhile, the JAMB has pegged the cut – off mark for admission for 2016 at 180.

The 180 benchmark, applies to all universities and higher institutions in the country, including polytechnics, colleges of education, and others.

Thursday, 2 June 2016

Abuja – The House of Representatives on Thursday summoned the Minister of Power, Mr Babatunde Fashola, to appear before its members to explain reasons for prevailing poor electricity supply in the country.
Abuja – The House of Representatives on Thursday summoned the Minister of Power, Mr Babatunde Fashola, to appear before its members to explain reasons for prevailing poor electricity supply in the country.
To appear with the minister are Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), National Electricity and Regulatory Commission (NERC), Generation Companies (Gencos) and Distribution Companies (Discos).
Fashola, the agencies and companies as well stakeholders in the power sector are expected to be at a public hearing to be conducted by the House on the power supply issue.
The invitation followed a motion which came under Matter of Urgent Public Importance through Rep. Johnson Agbonayinma (Edo-PDP), who called for urgent an attention to epileptic electricity supply across the nation.
He recalled that defunct power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was unbundled in 2010 into generation, transmission and distribution companies because the Federal Government could not manage the company.
He said that splitting it and given them to private concerns was to ensure improved efficiency and profitability in the sector.
The lawmaker, however, expressed dissatisfaction that in spite of privatising the company at a “landmark 2.5 billion dollars’’, Nigerians were yet to feel the impact of the exercise.
“When the Federal Government had the distribution and generation companies, light was more constant than what Nigerians are experiencing today.”
He decried the current situation where power generation which was over 4,000 megawatts when PHCN was operational had dropped to 1,500 megawatts, throwing the nation into darkness.
Agbonayinma the low electricity generation contradicted government’s promise to in the new arrangement, provide 5, 000 megawatts to Nigerians in the first instance.
The lawmaker expressed dismay that the increase in petrol pump price, soaring rise in prices of food items, collapsed roads, unemployment, and insecurity, had contributed to the hardship being faced by Nigerians.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote and it referred was to the Committee on Power for further legislative action.
No date was fixed for the public hearing.

A 12-year-old girl, identified only as Favour, has been rescued by the police in the Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos, where her aunt and the husband allegedly took her to get rid of a controversial pregnancy.

Police 2
A 12-year-old girl, identified only as Favour, has been rescued by the police in the Mafoluku, Oshodi area of Lagos, where her aunt and the husband allegedly took her to get rid of a controversial pregnancy.
It was learnt that Favour had been “raped” several times by her aunt’s husband, identified as Johnbull Dike, before she eventually got pregnant.
It was learnt that while Favour was put in police’s care, a manhunt was launched for Johnbull, a tricycle rider, who fled the area after the police rescued the girl.
According to Punch, Dike’s wife and the nurse who was caught during the abortion had been arrested by the Akinpelu Police Division. The girl was taken to the nurse on Sunmola Street, Mafoluku, on May 4.
Some residents gave a tip-off to a child rights’ group, Child Protection Network who involved the police. A source said that Favour, who was discovered to be four months pregnant, had been allegedly r*ped on several occasions by the suspect since January 2016.
It was said that Johnbull, a father of three and Happiness found out that Favour was pregnant in February, after which they bundled her to stay with their trader friend in Mafoluku, to hide the evil deed.
However, the woman was said to have returned Favour to the couple in April, saying she could not afford to take care of her.
Punch reports that Johnbull and Happiness, who lived on Brown Street, subsequently took Favour to the nurse to get rid of the pregnancy.
The matter was reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team in Alausa.
A worker with the Child Protection Network, Ebenezer Omejalile, said Favour did not inform her aunt about the r*pe, because the suspect had allegedly threatened to kill her if she did.
He said, “The case was brought to my attention by a community development committee secretary in Oshodi, Mr. Mamora. The victim was r*ped and impregnated by her aunt’s husband.
“I went to see the girl at the place where the aunt had taken her with the connivance of a nurse to abort the pregnancy. The girl underwent a scan before the abortion. It was a failed process because she began to bleed at the nurse’s place. The police were informed on that Wednesday and the two women were arrested, while Johnbull fled.
“The policemen took Favour to a proper hospital to get rid of the remaining foetus. As it is, the suspect is on the run because he knew that the girl is with the police.”
At the police station, Happiness said her husband had fled from the house since the day of her arrest.
She said, “He has not called me since that day. His phone numbers are also switched off.”
A police source said Happiness was later granted bail because her last child had an infection and needed her attention.
Lagos Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that “There is a case of defilement against Johnbull. His wife and the nurse have been arrested for aborting a pregnancy. The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the Gender Unit of the command.
“The suspect is on the run, but efforts are on to arrest him. Meanwhile, the wife and the nurse will both be charged to court.”
